Commonwealth Games 2018: Saina Nehwal defeats PV Sindhu, wins gold in women’s singles badminton

Gold Coast [Australia]: Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal defeated her opponent PV Sindhu by straight games to clinch the women’s singles title in the badminton competition at the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Sunday.

In a high-octane clash between the two Indian medalists, Saina took charge of the game in the last lap, sealing a 21-18, 23-21 victory in the all-Indian finals on the last day of the Games. In the first game, Saina maintained a steady lead at 18-14. However, Sindhu bounced back with three back-to-back points to take her score to 18. Saina then comfortably stole the game 21-18.

The second game saw a neck-to-neck competition between the two opponents, with thrilling rallies, taking the game to 20 all. However, Saina’s smash sealed her two-set victory and the title. With Saina clinching Gold, 22-year-old Sindhu bagged Silver; thus, taking India’s total in the Games to 62, including 26 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze medals.
