Not getting a seat in a packed compartment landed seven people in hospital on Tuesday morning. A man travelling in a Mumbai local train threw chilli powder on people after someone denied him a seat. The incident took place at Shahad station near Kalyan around 7.35 am in a general compartment.

On Tuesday morning, when the train left for CST from platform 2 of Shahad station, a man flung chilli powder on people that went into the eyes of seven passengers. These people started feeling an itching and burning sensation on their bodies and eyes. Due to severe burning, these passengers landed in the hospital on the same day. Railway officials have arrested a 25-year-old Sohrab Idrisi who threw chilli powder on the train bullies. Later, a complaint was lodged by a passenger, Deepak Gavade (27), with the Kalyan GRP. Based on this, the RPF from Kasara circulated CCTV footage to fruit vendors outside Shahad station.

During investigation, the RPF Kasara team circulated the CCTV footage of the incident to vendors outside Shahad station, when one of them identified Idrisi. On getting his address, the RPF went to his house in the evening and apprehended him. However, one of the victims told a leading daily that none of them had fought with Idrisi. The GRP officials have booked Idrisi, an AC mechanic, under sections 323, 324 of the IPC and 150 (a) and (e) of the Railway Act. He could face up to three years in jail.

Despite the rising number of complaints, railway authorities have had very little success in tackling rogue commuters who often form groups and bully other passengers to stop them from boarding or sitting. As a result, when all else fails, those on the receiving end sometimes take matters in their own hands.
