I’m a class 12 science student. I want to enter in the field of event management, but I don’t want to opt for formal education in this field. I want to keep studying in regular degree college until graduation or even postgraduation. Is there any master’s degree course like MBA, PhD or any other such courses which can lead my imagination and ability to handle pressure to a different level? — Onkar Chorge

Dear Onkar,

Firstly, you do not mention which stream of study you are interested in to pursue your master’s degree course or PhD. These courses are highly specialised and generally depend on the student’s interests and abilities so you need to decide which field you would like to study in. Depending on that you can narrow down on the course that you want to take up. There are numerous courses in the master’s and PhD level that students can take up.

As far as the MBS programme is concerned, it is a two-year full time programme that is quite rigorous and requires students to undergo a lot of research and analysis during the duration of the course. The MBA courses in reputed institutes calls for students who can work well under pressure since this course prepares students for jobs that require handling immense pressure in future.

If you want to enter the field of event management, there is no rule that you need to degree or formal education to enter this field. However, a formal education will expose you to various aspects of the profession and also offer you the opportunity to participate in events of all kinds to gain firsthand experience about the field. There are various courses available at institutes including diploma courses for undergraduate students. Some of these institutes include EMDI Institute of Media and Communication and National Institute of Event Management, which offer various diploma courses.

In fact, the need for professional education has become so pressing nowadays, that institutes are also trying to offer as specialiased options as possible. In this light, National Academy of Event Management and Development (NAEMD) offers UGC- recognised degree courses like in MBA in Event Management and PR and BBA in Event Management and PR. You can check the information at www.naemd.com. Indicative choices only.

International trade

I have completed my BMS and I am interested in doing a course in import and export. I am not sure whether it would be a good

career option for me. My idea is to start a business in import and export after completing the course. Please suggest if it would be a good career for me, or suggest any other career option. — Raj Mudaliyar

Dear Raj,

There must be some basis on which you are showing interest in export and import courses. Form the information you have provided, it seems that you are ready to take up any course based on the suggestion given by a counsellor. But you need to understand that every individual is different and your choices in career should be dependent on you likes, dislikes, interests and abilities.

In my opinion and experience, immediately after doing a course in a particular field, if the student takes up a job in the field for one or two year, it is beneficial. This job experience equips the student will a lot of in-depth understanding of the field and also lets the student analyse his abilities. This also gives a student a chance to put his learning from the course to practical use in real life.

Import and export is as good a career as any other, since there are opportunities in every field.

Microbiology or nutrition?

I am a BSC biotechnology graduate. I want to pursue my master’s in either microbiology or nutrition and dietetics. Which of these fields has a good scope in India?  — Uma Chandrashekhar

Dear Uma,

The health sector is picking up fast in India, and nutritionists form an integral part of healthcare. With increased awareness in this field, career prospects seem bright.

Microbiology is a different field altogether and involves applying scientific principles to materials to obtain results. The microorganisms involved could be part of plant or animal cells. There are also specialised fields like industrial microbiology, food microbiology and so on.

Which field you want to opt for is up to you, since you are making this choice at the postgraduation level, and none of these choices are directly related to your undergraduate degree.

As nutritionist and dietician, you can consider working for organisations which are involved in manufacture and research of new food products. There are also research labs, catering options, hospitals, fitness centres and spas that you can work for.

Also, while there is no formal ranking or listing of the best institutes/ universities for the specified field of interest in India, there are some good institute options that you have. Think well before you make your choice.
