The actress joins the league of beautiful women such as Zeenat Aman and Rekha who are not afraid to look ugly for a role These days, an actress will go to any length to ensure she looks glamorous and beautiful onscreen. Case in point is Kareena Kapoor in ‘Talaash’, who could have easily looked like her ‘Chameli’ character, but instead looked like a party girl.
Then there is Shruti Haasan, who like her superstar father Kamal Haasan, likes to play out-of-the-box characters. In her next film, Shruti will sport a deep scar on her right cheek as part of her character profile. Shruti stars in ‘D Day’, a crime thriller directed by Nikhil Adavni, which also stars Arjun Rampal, Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Huma Quershi. It is slated for release in July.
Shruti’s character is a Pakistani sex worker and the scar on her face was the most defining characteristic required for the role. Shruti’s only concern was that the scar should look genuine, and she agreed only after consulting with her father.
This move puts her in the league of actresses devoted to their craft, and to not just looking good. We’re talking about women such as Zeenat Aman and Rekha. In 1978’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, Zeenat’s famous profile was disfigured by a very gruesome scar that was a pivotal factor in her relationship with hero Sashi Kapoor. Similarly, Rekha — known as a timeless diva — had not qualms playing a simple, unattractive and scarred woman in 1988’s ‘Khoon Bhari Mang’. Unlike Zeenat, Rekha had to sport the scar for just a little while, after which she has a transformation due to plastic surgery.
Actor are enthusiastic about sporting a scar or disfiguring their face for a role, but it is a rare move among actresses. Now that Shruti has accepted the challenge, and the scar sure looks authentic in the promos, lets hope it brings her luck.
