Facing its first Assembly session, though of only two days, the new Bhupendra Patel government ran into a belligerent Opposition on Monday with the latter staging a walkout over the ruling BJP not allowing a condolence resolution for Covid-19 victims.

On day one, spirited Congress party members shouted slogans like “justice for the dead” and then walked out of the House.

Earlier, two Congress members expressed the party’s aggressive mood as they walked in wearing medical aprons to register their protest against the alleged mismanagement of the Covid-19 crisis by the BJP government.

They demanded that Rs 4 lakh compensation should be paid to family of Corona victims and not Rs 50,000, which was equivalent to cattle death compensation.

Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani alleged that more than 3 lakh people had succumbed to the pandemic in the State. He said that the “insensitive government” had shockingly refused to even bring a resolution condoling the death of Corona patients in the House.

Congress MLA from Daripaur Gyasuddin Sheikh said that a judicial inquiry should to be set up in the Corona mismanagement. He also demanded that the kin of the people who lost their lives to the dreaded pandemic should be given jobs.

Earlier, the issue of narcotics seizure from the Gujarat coast rocked the State Assembly when Dhanani alleged that “Gandhi’s Gujarat is now in the hands of the mafia.” This provoked the treasury benches to stand up and registered a strong protest against this. There were verbal arguments and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi claimed that the state was in safe hands.

State Health Minister Rishikesh Patel called this a political stunt by the Congress and said this was time when all members should unitedly put up a fight against Corona. He said that 10,820 people had died due to Corona and government would pay Rs 50,000 compensation to the kin of those dead.
