Mumbai: The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Sachin Sawant, who has been at the forefront to strongly put forth the party's argument while taking on BJP on a number of issues, on Tuesday resigned from his post. The trigger was the state unit chief Nana Patole’s decision to appoint Atul Londhe as the MPCC’s chief spokesman. Sawant, who was the media in charge for 10 years, has sent a letter to the high command with a plea to relieve him from the responsibility of spokesman and assign him a new job. Sawant will continue to work in his capacity as the state Congress general secretary.

Sawant was perturbed over the appointment of Londhe, who had quit the Nationalist Congress Party and joined the Congress in November 2016, as the chief spokesman. In the new arrangement, Sawant as the spokesman will have to take tips from Londhe before arguing the party's official line in the press, media and social media. Sawant was clearly not comfortable with the changes and preferred to step down as the spokesman.

Barely few hours after MPCC issued release on new appointments, Sawant removed from twitter bio the post of spokesman.

Sawant was hogging the headlines with a number of his tweets and videos targeting the BJP and the NDA government at the Centre.

During the ongoing controversy over the alleged drug seizure on cruise ships and the arrest of Aryan Khan and others, Sawant had demanded action against Narcotics Control Bureau officers for violation of provisions of NDPS Act. He had also demanded that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government should hold a probe into the alleged collusion between the NCB and the BJP questioning the involvement of private people in the NCB raid on cruise.
