The Property Cell of the city crime branch arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly duping people. The accused Lakir Hussain along with his accomplice used to dupe people on the pretext of counting their notes inside the bank or by removing a few notes by sleight of hand, claiming that few of the notes are counterfeit, said police.
In the first week of April, a 53-year-old woman Farida Electricwala had withdrawn ₹1.47 lakh from her bank in Nagpada area. Khan and his accomplice who were there lured her into a trap by claiming few of the notes were counterfeit and took her money on the pretext of counting. The two then escaped with ₹ 50,000 cash.
Based on her complaint an offence of cheating was registered by Sir J J Marg police station. The Property Cell which was conducting a parallel investigation identified Khan and arrested him on Tuesday from Ambivali in Kalyan.
According to the officials, Khan has at least eight such cases registered against him in police stations across Mumbai and Thane, he was later handed over to J J Marg police station for further investigation.
