Two more states of art car sheds – one at Vangaon on the Western Railway (WR) route and the other at Karjat on the Central Railway (CR) route – for the suburban trains will be ready by 2025.

These new car sheds will be high-tech. MRVC is also planning to install sensors for inspection of locals, which is done manually at present.

“Each car shed will have state-of-the-art facilities and will be designed to maintain around 100 trains in a day.” said an official of MRVC, adding that keeping in mind the introduction of more air-conditioned local trains in future these car-shed will be designed.

"The process of land acquisition has now started. Both car sheds will have a capacity of maintenance facilities of around 100 local trains each " said Ravi Agarwal, Managing Director of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC).

These car sheds are being constructed under MUTP-3A as more trains will be introduced with the completion of capacity-augmentation projects. MRVC will execute the project. Each car shed needs approximately 35 hectares of land.

“We require around 35 hectares of land for each car shed, most of which is barren. While part of the land is owned by the Railways, the rest will have to be acquired," Agarwal said.

These new car sheds will also help unburden the load on existing car sheds. Currently, Mumbai’s suburban network has six car sheds, of these, three are located on CR at Kurla, Sanpada, and Kalwa, while three on WR are at Mumbai Central, Kandivli and Virar.

Over 250 local trains undergo inspection and maintenance at these sheds every day, besides parking.
