From now on, if you have been assaulted in Mumbai, and approach a police station to file a case, a police constable will accompany you to the closest municipal hospital to help you get your medical case papers as duly required to file the complaint.
On June 14, 2021, Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale issued a circular to all the 93 police stations in Mumbai asking them to depute a police constable with an assault victim. FPJ has the copy of the circular that states if any assault victim approaches the police station, he has to be helped to get the medical treatment and case papers.
"The victim is asked to visit the municipal hospital nearby. Asking to get his medical examination done by himself is wrong as per the rule," states the circular. "He should be given a medical memo and a diary entry should be made. And accordingly, a police constable should accompany the victim to the hospital. And after getting the medical examination, he should be brought back to the police station and a case should be registered as per his statement," said Hemant Nagrale speaking to FPJ.
Nagrale said, "It will not only help the victim, it will also reduce the chances of burking in crime cases. It would also help in negating the possible threat or attack from criminals on the concerned person again," added Nagrale.
A senior police officer from Mumbai police said that sending a constable along with an assault victim for medical examinations will add to the authenticity of the medical report.
“Also, at times when the victim is badly injured and bleeding, he may not be in a condition to go to the hospital all by himself. The company of a police constable will not only help the victim, but it will also ensure his safety. It will also ensure that the medical examination is done faster and efficiently," added the officer, requesting anonymity.Navi Mumbai: Retired police officer shoots his sons in Airoli, arrested
