Andheri Police arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly committing thefts at senior citizen's homes by befriending them and posing as a paying guest to gain access. The arrested accused, identified as Ekta Pramod Anand, has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for theft in a house dwelling.
According to police, a 62-year-old woman, Ida Rodriguez approached Andheri police station on May 29, claiming that a woman, who posed as a prospective paying guest had come to her house and decamped with gold, valuables, and cash collectively valued at ₹1.63 lakh, when the senior citizen was praying. Based on the sexagenarian's complaint, a case of theft of gold chains, mangal sutra, two mobile phones, and cash was registered and a probe was initiated.
Vijay Belge, senior inspector of Andheri police station said that the officials scrutinised the CCTV camera footage of the residential building as well as the neighbouring areas to identify the accused woman. "Primary probe revealed that the woman had taken two auto-rickshaws, as seen in the CCTV camera footage and the autos were traced. Upon questioning the drivers, they revealed that the woman was last dropped near Four Bungalows area in Andheri (W)," Belge said.
Acting on this information, police had alerted all their informers and based on the tip-off, learnt that she was a resident of MHADA colony in Four Bungalows area, from where she was apprehended. During investigation, the accused, Ekta Anand, confessed to her crime and police recovered the stolen valuables worth ₹1.63 lakh from her custody.
Police suspect that Anand could have duped other senior citizens as well, using the same modus operandi of posing as a paying guest to trick them into believing her and then decamping with their valuables. The officials are checking to ascertain if Anand has a criminal record and how many more victims were duped by her.
