Navi Mumbai: NMMC conducts special vaccination drive for elderly and destitute at Airoli Ashram

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organized a special vaccination drive for old and destitute women at Premdan Asharam in Airoli on Thursday where as many as 109 old women were vaccinated. Last year, during the first wave of COVID-19, a total of 100 old women were found positive of COVID-19.

Since old citizens are more vulnerable to COVID infection and the civic body decided to undertake a special vaccination drive for them on a priority basis. “Keeping this in mind, the civic body organized a special vaccination session for these women today. Each of these beneficiary women was registered on the government's COWIN portal and vaccinated,” said an official from the civic Health Department. He added that this a positive step of NMMC towards the destitute, the elderly, the specially-abled and the women suffering from various ailments.

Last year, during the first wave of COVID 19, two elderly women at the Ashram located at sector 17 in Airoli experienced symptoms of fever. When a special COVID test camp was organized, more than 100 women were found COVID positive. “It was a challenge to treat them as many of them have mental and physical disabilities. Even majority of women over 60 years of age and they are suffering from the different types of co-morbidity,” said the official.

Considering all these facts, the Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, set up a special COVID-19 Care centre at the ashram to treat these women. “While serving these destitute, crippled, diseased as well as elderly senior citizens, the health team of the corporation took a humanitarian approach along with the health service and worked with a very dedicated attitude,” added the official.
