The Vashi police registered a case under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 against a 34-year-old man for allegedly giving his wife triple talaq over the phone from Saudi Arabia.
According to the police, the accused Sufian Shaikh is a resident of Mumbra Shilphata. He had married the 32-year-old complainant, a resident of Vashi, in 2011 and they also have two daughters.
“During the wedding, the complainant’s family gave the accused some gold, furniture, electronics, and Rs 2 lakh in cash as dowry. However, his family members were not happy and they started harassing her for more money from her parents,” said a police officer from Vashi police station.
“In 2016 the accused went to work in Saudi Arabia. However, the groom’s family increased the harassment against the victim. Therefore, she came to her parent’s house at Vashi and joined a private company in 2018. The accused then stopped talking to her on phone and also stopped sending money for the wellbeing of their daughters,” he said
“In October last year, she had a heated argument with the accused on phone, following which the accused gave her instant triple talaq. Her family members had tried to patch up after that but to no avail. Finally, they approached us and narrated everything,” the officer further said.
While the accused has been booked under sections 3 and 4 of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights Marriage) Act, 2019, three members of his family have also been booked under sections 34, 406, and 498-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
