Bhayandar : Sleuths of the Valiv police have arrested a 27-year-old tempo driver who was caught red-handed while off-loading hazardous chemical waste into a rivulet situated amidst a densely populated locality in the Shivaji Nagar area of Valiv village in Vasai. The action followed after residents of the area alerted civic officials about pungent smell emanating from the rivulet and the presence of delivery-tempo laden with drums parked in the vicinity late on Friday night.
A team of officials from the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) immediately reached the spot and caught the tempo driver red handed as he was trying to dump more drums into the rivulet. The accused was later identified as Aslam Choudhary (27) and has been handed over to the custody of the Valiv police.
“Initial investigations revealed that Choudhary was handed over the responsibility of getting rid of chemical waste and effluents by a Wada based industrial company.” informed, Assistant Police Inspector, Ramdas Vakode.
A case under sections 277 (fouling water of public spring or reservoir), 288 (Making atmosphere noxious to health) and under section 25 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 has been registered against the accused.” We are trying to track the source from the chemical waste was dispatched.” Vakode said.
