The popular lottery draw of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority ( MHADA) saw a sparse turnout. Around 400 people visited the auditorium and the ground outside the Rang Sharda hall, the lotter

y venue. MHADA attributed the turnout to its online presence. ” We had already announced that the results of the lottery would be available on our website as well.

The lottery for 2,517 houses was announced on Thursday, amidst tight police protection. But the low audience clearly depicted a trend that has been set since the last year. Till 2010, lakhs of people visited the hall and the ground. In 2011, hardly 350 showed up. At one MHADA struggled to find lottery winners to felicitate on stage. Five lottery winners showed up to save MHADA from its blushes.

For 36 of the winners, the lottery was just that- a alt39 lotteryalt39. These winners were allotted flats that attracted a low number of applicants.

The majority of these flats were in the economically weaker section ( EWS) scheme at Mira Road.

Oddly, the 14 flats reserved for Central Government employees attracted exactly 14 entries resulting in victory for every applicants. Coincidence? The 14 houses reserved for MHADA employees, defense personnel families and freedom fighters saw three, nine and seven entries respectively.

The reserved category for political representatives ( MP/ MLA/ MLC) in the lower income group ( LIG) categories at various places had 27 flats but only three applications were received. Obviously, all of them were allotted flats.
