However, Guardian Minister Jayant Patil while taking a serious view of the situation has ordered the BMC to fill up potholes on the roads before Ganeshotsav.

Addressing a special meeting on potholes, Patil who is incharge of Mumbai district, also made a statement to the effect in the upper house on Friday.

Pothole- filling work in the city should be completed before Ganeshotsav, directed Patil who is also the statealt39s rural development minister. The ten- day Ganesh festival, which this year begins on September 1, attracts huge crowds in the metropolis.

Kiran Pawaskar of NCP while squarely blaming the Sena- ruled BMC alleged a scam to the tune of Rs 600- 800 crore in the Roads Department of the civic body.

Despite poor conditions of roads, contracts are repeatedly given to the same contractors, Pawaskar said.

The Congress- NCP ministers indulged in tit for tat after the Sena, MNS legislators blamed government agencies for potholes on the roads. The Sena MLAs however feel that BMC is being unnecessarily targeted, even as roads and flyovers under MMRDA are in bad shape. Roads in BKC, for instance, are full of potholes, but the state govt is not being criticised for it even though it is MMRDA that is responsible for the maintenance,” they pointed out.

With the Ganesh festival fast approaching, the BMC has been drawing flak from all corners for potholed roads.

The Sena- BJP which rule the BMC said that even the State Government should be pulled up for the shoddy job done by MMRDA on the recently inaugurated flyovers.

” Work undertaken for the Skywalks, Metro and Monorail have added to potholes on the roads. Why not target the Congress- NCP govt?” they asked. ” We donalt39t deny the fact that there are potholes on city roads. But the BMC is diligently trying to fill the potholes and is keeping the contractors on their toes. They said that the civic body has spent almost Rs 35 crore of the total budget of Rs 40 crore set aside to deal with potholes.
