According to ICRA Limiteds credit rating feature in march 2012 on the Indian pharmaceutical sector. ” Despite challenges, leading Indian players continue to exhibit strong profitability indicators ( excluding one- time instances like exclusivityrelated aberrations or impact of foreign exchange fluctuations) and credit metrics. These strengths are also reflected in their strong credit profile.” The report further says that the outlook on the Indian pharmaceutical companies remains favourable, and there exists a strong growth potential.

The industry is estimated to have generated revenue worth US$ 13.1 billion in financial 2011, according to a new Research and Markets report, ” Indian Pharma Sector Forecast 2014.” India is pegged to emerge as a leading global player in pharmaceutical industry by 2020, securing a place among the top five major global markets, according to Ikon Marketing Consultant ( IMC).

Also, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( Assocham) has said it expects the Indian pharmaceutical industry to reach US$ 20 billion by 2015, making it one of the worlds top 10 pharmaceuticals markets.

With these statistics, one can hardly go wrong with the pharmaceutical sector, as jobs opportiunities are bound to increase with growth.

To get there

The trajectory path is simple. The first choice a stuednt needs to make is to opt for the science stream after class 10. Clearing the class 12 ( HSC or equivalent) exam with physics, chemistry, biology and maths will lead to two further options – either a diploma, or an undergraduate programme – the fouryear Bachelors in Pharmacy.

With the diploma, fewer job and career options are available to students, since the programme is not as comprehensive as the bachelors programme. For an idea of the career options availabe after each programme, check teh chart below.

A BPharm can also pave the way to a masters, where in different specialisations are available and which also paves the way for a doctoral degree for interested candidates. Teaching would be possible after an MPharm.
