The feel- good factory ( Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raju Hirani) are back with yet another moralistic tale, this time about a destitut

e Parsi allmale family of wannabe cricketers.

The Mota pa, i. e Grandfather Deboo ( Boman Iran) is a crochety old man sour about his failed cricketing ambitions. His son Rustom Russi ( Sharman) , a clerk at the RTO, a young widower, was never allowed to dream big about cricket because it once brought misfortune to Mota pa. Russis son Khayo ( Ritvik Sathore) is another story altogether.

His cricketing ambitions are in full flow thanks to his fathers full- on encouragement and in spite of their so called impoverished state.

You might well ask how that could be possible. In Bollywood parlance, impoverishment is a state of mind, not being. Khayo is not a gully cricket player.

He belongs to a Parsi family who owns a pretty spacious house.

He goes for coaching and even gets selected for training under a foreign coach and a chance to play at the Mecca of cricket , Lords.

But their money doesnalt39t run far enough to buy a cricketing bat or a pair of shoes.

After all, his father is a mere Government clerk with a salary so meagre that he cannot even get a loan of Rs. 1,50,000 /-., which amounts to the cost of the training camp in England. A scenario so fake was not expected from Raju Hirani ( Munnabhai, 3 idiots) and company. But we are almost willing to forgive the contretemps because The little boy, Ritivk, is adorable, Boman as Mota pa is simply magnificent and the assorted cast of little known actors show- off their best faces! In the opening sequences Khayo is shown as sulking when he doesnalt39t get to watch cricket on television and even curls up in bed when his fathers attempt to cheer him, causes grievous harm to the Television. He is also not too happy when his father expresses doubt about being able to buy him a new bat.

But the indulgent father is quick to allay his misgivings and picks out all his savings from every nook and corner of the house, even breaks open the piggy bank, to finance the purchase of a bat.

Yeah… thats a scene meant to establish the lengths the father would go to please his little boy. So when the asking rate is not just a few thousands,- it gets upped to a lakh and half, you shouldnalt39t be surprised by what the scrupulouslyhonest straitlaced Russi gets up to. A chance encounter with Bubbo didi ( Seema Pahwa), a local wedding planner, shows him the way out of his predicament.

But Russi prefers to bank his aspirations on a loan from his Provident Fund.

His senior dissuades him from expecting it to happen anytime soon.

It then becomes Mota pas job to persuade his once upon a time friend, the legendary ex- India player, Mr Dharmadhikari to help. But Dharmadhikari, stays true to his former villainous self and tries to strike the little boy off the selectors list.

Russis only way out is to get Sachins Ferrari to the local goon- politicians sons wedding and hope that all will end well for him and his family. The narrative is quintessentially unhurried and sets a pliable tone for what is to come. The screenplay is short on reality and exists on a quasi fantasia plane. The relationship between father and son appears a little too perfect to be true. When Mota pa capitulates and decides to help out it comes just a tad too easily.

The same happens when theres a role reversal at the end and its the turn of the little boy to preach morals to his father. There are many interesting characters embedded in the screenplay and most of them come out well on screen. The actors playing the roles of the politico- goon, his son, Sachin Tendulkars housekeeper, his buildings watchman, Bubbo didi and Vilayat sir, fortify the narrative with their supple timing and endearing performances.

Paresh Rawal also puts in a perfect act. Unfortunately the character of Russi, is jus
