SC okays reclamation of Karnataka mines
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday gave its nod to the central empowered committees ( CEC) plan for the reclamation and rehabilitation of the iron ore mines in Bellary, Chitradurga and Tum
kur districts of Karnataka. An apex court forest bench of Chief Justice S H Kapadia, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Swatanter Kumar while accepting the recommendation of the CEC said that the ” implementation of reclamation and rehabilitation plans” shall start immediately.
Naroda Patiya riot case verdict in June
AHMEDABAD: A special trial court is likely to pronounce its verdict on June 30 in connection with the massacre of 97 people from minority community in Naroda Patiya area during 2002 post- Godhra riots after it completed hearing the final arguments today.
The key accused in the case included former minister in Narendra Modi government and MLA from Naroda constituency Maya Kodnani, ex- VHP leader Babu Bajrangi, local BJP leaders Bipin Panchal, Kishan Korani, Ashok Sindhi and Raju Chaumal.
Cashgate: SC judge recuses himself
NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court judge on Friday recused himself from hearing the petition filed by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Nirmal Yadav seeking quashing of proceedings against her in the 2008 cash- atjudges door case. Justice J S Khehar, who was a part of the bench headed by Justice B S Chauhan, recused himself from hearing Justice Yadavs petition.
US historian gets visa extension
NEW DELHI: In a reprieve for controversial US historian Peter Heehs who faced deportation from India, the Union Home Ministry on Friday extended his visa by one more year with effect from April 15. Home Ministry sources said the formal order on extension of Heehsalt39a visa was issued on Friday. Heehs, whose visa will expire on April 15, had applied for extension of his stay before the Puducherry Foreigner Regional Registration Officer ( FRRO).
Summons to Yeddy, Somanna
BANGALORE: A Lokayukta court on Friday ordered issue of summons to former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Housing Minister V Somanna and two others in a case relating to alleged irregularities in denotification of land. Ordering issue of summons, judge N K Sudhindra Rao directed Yeddyurappa, Somanna, his wife and a person named Lingaraju to appear without fail on April 30.
MBA student killed while speeding
NEW DELHI: A 23- year- old MBA student was killed while his friend escaped unhurt when his speeding car turned turtle after hitting a road divider in south Delhi early on Friday, police said. Ramandeep Singh, a resident of Yusuf Sarai in south Delhi, was driving the Toyota Corolla car. He died on the spot while his friend Neha Bindra escaped unhurt. The accident took place on the Panchsheel Park flyover around 4 am when they were returning from Gurgaon after attending a party.
” Ramandeep raced his car on the Panchsheel Park flyover, lost control and hit the divider. The car turned turtle, killing Ramandeep on the spot,” said a police officer. ” The driver was not drunk,” added the official.
Rape case: UP suspends Dy SP
LUCKNOW/ KANPUR: The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday suspended a Deputy Superintendent of Police for his alleged role in the rape and sexual exploitation of the teenage daughter of an IAF official in Kanpur. Amarjit Singh Shahi, posted in Pratapgarh district, was suspended with immediate effect after his conduct was found unbecoming of an official, sources said.
