'Journalism is not a crime': Israeli police condemned globally after video of Al Jazeera journalist's arrest goes viral

Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Givara Budeiri was arrested by Israeli police while she was covering a demonstration in the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Israeli police assaulted the journalist while arresting her on Saturday and destroyed equipment of the accompanying cameraman Al Jazeera cameraman Nabil Mazzawi.


However, several hours later Budeiri was released on the condition that she does not go to Sheikh Jarrah for 15 days.


“They came from everywhere, I don’t know why, they kicked me to the wall,” Budeiri told Al Jazeera, moments after her release late on Saturday.

“They kicked me inside the car in a very bad way … they were kicking me from everywhere,” she said.

Even though the journalist has now been released, the video of the arrest has spread far and wide on social media attracting a lot of criticism for the Israeli police and government.

The video has drawn sharp criticism from across the globe by journalists as well as the general public. It has also rekindled the old debate about freedom of speech and Press freedom on social media.
